This was more of a 2.5 star rating for me, but I usually round off my stars to keep it simple. Let me tell you why I feel it's a 2.5 star rating.

Author's Note: As of 09/11/2012 the novella has been edited. Grammatical errors only exist in older versions.

This is a huge reason.

Though an updated version was available, and I did download it and had my Kindle on to take the update, when I finally picked up the book, my version was in fact still riddled with grammatical AND spelling errors. Whether the update took or not, it doesn't really matter in my mind, as the book was still being offered for sale prior to the update.

Prepare yourselves for a rant.

I am not one of those reviewers that sees a couple of errors and goes apes***. That being said, if it's reoccurring to the point of distraction and frustration, then I am really bothered. The bottom line is this... Though I got the read free for the purpose of review, I still approach the book as if it had been a purchase. And had I purchased the 'earlier' version, I would have been extremely ticked off. Because the majority if not all of the errors I encountered could have been obliterated by a simple run of the trusty spell check feature on any word processing software. And it irks me to think that this story was released without the courtesy of an edit in the first place.

I ended up deleting the files of the following installments of the series from my Kindle, and downloading the other books again hoping that the 'new versions' will stick. Because I don't want to repeat the same reading experience in the following novellas.

Moving on!

Cover art is stunning. (Wish that much attention had gone into the finished product in the first place...) Beautiful and visually stimulating, I honestly wouldn't have had to read the blurb to want this.

The storyline is undeniably interesting, if somewhat confusing in the beginning. There was a lot of explanation in regards to the parameters of this world. But for that I am grateful as things could get really convoluted if not explained properly. But the plot does become focus quickly. And what is this story about? Well, let's just say that everything you thought you knew about Snow White is blown right out of the water, as told by the 'evil mommy' the Snow Queen. It becomes quite apparent that the Snow Queen really got the shaft in the original version of the fairy tale, if you believe her side of the tale.

I enjoyed looking at the story through the Snow Queen's eyes. It becomes quite apparent that this is not a standalone novel, and that the story of Snow White continues on in the books following.

It has a modern spin that is intriguing, yet slightly unbelievable. I am not sure that I buy into the Snow Queen eye rolling and her 'Whatevah' retorts. She is still a refined and regal figure in my mind. But you know what? I want to see where this goes. I am still intrigued.

Snow White Blood Red A Grimm Diaries Prequel #1 The Grimm Diaries eBook Cameron Jace Danielle Littig Snow White Queen Reviews

*Reviewing the prequels as a whole instead of individually*

I lucked out and discovered these prequels during the one-prequel-a-day freebie promotion (bummer, I missed the second book, I must have been having sex that day). What gems! They were strange yet fantastic twists to classic fairy tales. They were quick and enjoyable reads. The storytelling was imaginative with a touch of humor. I truly got a kick out of the takes and I think those who especially like fairy tale re-tellings will do too. Furthermore, these prequels did their job, now I'm pumped for Grimm Diaries!

This author is a gem as well. Apparently, the initial publication had many writing errors. He took these critiques (some quite harsh) and made the necessary changes. What a trooper. Certainly a sign of a great author in my book. Well done, Mr. Jace!

Prequels Snow White Blood Red; Ashes to Ashes Cinder to Cinder (didn't read this one); Beauty Never Dies; Ladle Rat Rotten Hut; Mary Mary Quite Contrary
Lots of the reviews for this prequel note the poor grammar, confusing use of words, and odd switches between formally elegant writing and awkward vernacular. Well, please note in the "Book Description" part of this page that Cameron Jace mentions that he has written previously under a different name. Working backwards from the reviews of previous books written under that different name we find "The Human Effect", by Akmal Shebl, who appears to be the real Cameron Jace. I could be wrong; I have no special knowledge here. But, look at the reviews for "The Human Effect". They all refer to an Egyptian author writing in English for the first time, who "gleefully mixes vernacular with formal prose... with a voice and style that set him apart from other novelists,... and that strange voice is intoxicating in its originality - and frustrating to those who are distracted by grammar and punctuation and spelling and phrasing errors." Sounds to me that what has frustrated many reviewers here is that same Akmal Shebl style. I'm willing to overlook that frustration because there are some moments of arresting originality here.

As to this "Snow White, Blood Red", it seems to me that the prequel has served its purpose. I am curious to see what our author produces, and pleased to have found this as a freebie.
There is something fun and original about this novella. This being the first of the prequels to Snow White Sorrow, I was over the moon about getting my hands on it. I mean I have only been drooling over that book for months! I love the description and how the "Evil Queen" seems to not be all you believe her to be. Yet there is some things that lead you to believe she is every bit as evil as first imagined. However this is what some of us adore isn't it?

This prequel kind of skims the surface of what you need to know about Snow White. It also kind of gave me a fae feeling with the need to keep everyone's real name under wraps. I know this is not the intent but it is once again the power of names right... Basically the Evil Queen explains the need for hunting Snow White and also that she is not an evil step mother but her mother by birth. We also get a more basic glimpse into how Snow White is not the innocent that we know her as.

There is actually a lot of things I didn't expect to find in this little prequel that I did. I love the darker and more twisted way that the Grimms immortals are portrayed. From what I know of the originals they weren't the sweet
dreams kind of tale to start. I mean in the original Cinderella her step sisters cut off their toes and heels just to try and fit in the glass slipper! Not anything you heard as a child right. I am one to read something and see it for the story that is behind it and this has wonderful potential. There are some grammar issues here and there but for the most part I found myself so submerged that I didn't notice.
