Want to learn more about history, but don’t think you have the time? Think again.

World War Two was the most destructive, devastating conflict in world history, with major battles stretching across the world; this was truly a global conflict in every sense. An estimated 17 million soldiers were killed on all sides, with civilian casualties reaching more than double that figure in the Soviet Union and China alone.

The Very Brief History series is intended to give the reader a short, concise account of the most important events in world history. Each book provides the reader with the essential facts concerning a particular event or person; no distractions, just the essential facts, allowing the reader to master the subject in the shortest time possible.

With The Very Brief History series, anyone can become a history expert!

A rather neat summary of what led up to World War II and the alliances and conflicts that arose. A few surprises for me, too, such as Britain "invading" Iceland in order to ward of Germany doing so. Some solid dates for some of the events would've helped to get a clearer picture. Also, by using more sub-heads, the book would be more easily understood. This is particularly true when you already have a condensation of a big period in history.

I know that in a "brief history" of a major event, some things have to be left out. But some big events were omitted in this book, such as the Japanese "Rape of Nanking." Also there is little reference to some of the Allies, which included Commonwealth countries such as Canada, a major player World War II.

I admire the author's handling of all the events before, during and after World War II. But there were so many events bunched together that at times it became a muddle to me. That's why some timelines and sub-heads could've helped. Yet, I benefited from this brief history of a war that began shortly before I was born in 1940. I vividly remember some of the news reports and radio broadcasts about it.

World War Two A Very Brief History eBook Mark Black Reviews

It's an OK introduction for folks who are new to the subject.
As the events of World War II become more distant from general public knowledge, this concise yet thorough book serves as a clear reminder of the war's tragic scope and impact. Events leading to the war, major battles, the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagaski, and the war's aftermath are all covered in a logical and readable manner. Whether you are a student seeking to supplement your knowledge or to pass an exam, or simply someone wanting an overview of this chapter of the world's past, World War II A Very Brief History is an excellent choice at an outstanding price.
I am a great believer in these brief history books and I keep hoping that the under-40 set might bump into them and spend a bit of time away from Facebook and Tweeting to finally learn about some basics of the history of the last 100 years. They each manage to squeeze an amazing quantity of information into an hour's worth of reading, but I would suggest that just a slight increase in the number of pages would permit the author/editor to demonstrate better the complexity and magnitude of the subject(s) being covered. How about labeling this series as "concise," rather than brief?
Have to give the author a nod for even attempting to describe in the most general of terms the dynamics encompassing WW2 in a mere 38 pages. However, I have to admit that the book barely whet my appetite given how broad a subject this is, and thus was hard for me to swallow particularly since the only picture provided was that of the cover art. If all you want is a very quick overview then by all means give it a read, but as for myself, I'm going to have to search for more material given my expansive interest in this topic.
This brief account of World War II really helped me to understand how the war played out from beginning to end. From 1939 to 1945, approximately 60 million people died as a result of this bloody conflict. I knew some of the history, especially the role that the United States and Britain had in defeating Germany. But I think that the great sacrifice of the Soviet Union's people has been underappreciated. Originally, the Soviets were an ally of the Germans. But when Germany needed more resources and "living space," and invaded Soviet Russia, they bit off more than they could chew. The aggressive Japanese forces, drawing the United States into the conflict, were finally defeated with the two atomic bombs called "little boy" and "fat man." The Jewish holocaust by Germany was exposed at the Nuremberg trials in sickening detail. War is always devastating, but the huge scale and the drama of all the battles is brought to light in this excellent account.
Being a homeschooling parent, I'm always on the lookout for books from which I can glean informational tidbits, usually for incorporation into our curriculum or relevant conversations. History, in general, is an exceptionally convoluted and intricate subject, so it's always nice to have an outline to start with. This book is just that.

While it's not meant to be an utterly comprehensive textbook on the subject, 'World War Two A Very Brief History' skims over the entirety of that tragic time, highlighting most of the essential facts and events. After reading this meaty summary, you can be confident that you know at least a bit more than the basics. If desired, you can then take it upon yourself to go further, selecting topics of interest and researching them in-depth elsewhere.

Since I'd use it as a basis for something bigger, I appreciate the methodical and to-the-point manner with which this book is written. It delivers precisely what the title indicates.
The author does a fair job of covering a huge topic in a brief space. There are the usual grammatical and spelling errors that you will find in this series, but there aren't as many as in other volumes. Of course, in such a brief work, one has to make decisions about what to include and what to leave out, but I find it interesting that the author adds a little detail to some battles but doesn't refer to the D-Day invasion by name. It is swept under a general reference to the invasion of France.
