I've loved CCS since I stole the paperback off my brother's bookshelf in the 80s. The Kindle version leaves much to be desired, and there's one change to the text in the 1995 version that I vehemently disagree with.

First, considering that this e-book costs the same as a paperback, I would expect that some proofreading had actually been done. There are so many wrong words that it's distracting. There's even a word or two that just aren't words, just a few random letters strung together. As much as I love the Callahan and Lady Sally books, I won't be buying any more electronically.

Second, there's an "update" in "A Voice is Heard in Ramah..." that makes no sense. Tom Flannery is a character who'd been given 9 months to live when he first walked in to Callahan's. In "A Voice..." it's mentioned that he has some of his skin cells preserved at a place in Manhattan where they're holding cells for the future when cloning humans is possible. It states that he's frozen there "waitin' for 'em to invent a cure for AIDS". Now, these stories obviously take place in the 1970s, and the original text in my paperback says that he was waiting for a cure for leukemia. HIV and AIDS weren't recognized by the CDC until 1981, the folks at Callahan's wouldn't have known about it. Also, HIV is a disease you catch, not a genetic disorder. Someone with AIDS could be cloned without any risk of having the disease.

I recommend that anyone interested in the Callahan books pick up the dead-tree versions. They are, quite simply, fantastic. The e-books obviously need some serious polishing.

I love these Callahan stories. It took me a while to realise why I love them. You see, Callahan's is the current reincarnation of the legendary Inn at the Crossroads. It is a place where travellers and strangers and seekers and lost souls can tell their stories. Nothing is a surprize at Callahans, for anything can happen there. For the price of a drink you can tell your story- and have it respectfully listened to by people who will try to help you if they can- or at least sincerely try to understand. Needless to say, this is not your modern sports bar....
Did I mention that the clientel of Callahan's are not just your ordinary Outsiders? It is not at all uncommon for time travellers, aliens, mutants, to cross the threshold. As long as you don't pull any rough stuff there, all are welcome at Callahan's.
The funny thing is, places like Callahan's do actually exist. You don't find them, or even here about them, unless you really need to find them. They are havens outside the world where good fellowship, respect, and empathy still maintain a toehold in this brave new world.

The original Callahan stories that started it all and began Spider Robinsons writing career. They are gentle, easy to read stories with a cheerfulness to them. You can put up with the puns because the stories are fun to escape with. If you have not read much science fiction, give these a try. If you have read a lot, go back and read them again like I did.
I can see why people have compared Robinson to Heinlein. He's a wonderful writer. I am now on a quest to read the rest of the Callahan novels. Who would I recommend this book to? Anyone able to read it and understand basic English. There is something here for all.
BRILLIANT. This is a classic, and an excellent read for the sci-fi enthusiast, or even just the fiction reader. A great collection of shorts about a unique drinking establishment. Required reading if you call yourself a sci-fi-fan, on par with THHGTTG (but not as big/grand/epic) or some of Poe's sci-fi.
Very funny storyteller with a penchant for "puns". One of several books by Spider Robinson [ each one as good as the next ] mostly told by "Jake Stonebender" . This book concerns tales happening in/at Callahan's ... a bar that you find when you need to. Variety abounds in the stories here; circling around Callahan and his "regular-irregulars" [My term] Well written and reader friendly. I think I have read all of the Callahan books and if not; I WILL keep a hopeful eye out for a new one!
The cleverness is in the puns, not so much in the plots. Callahans Place is a place for people who need it, as stated by the author in his persona, Jake. However, not all readers will need this place. The stories are meant to be uplifting, and at first they are, but after a while it begins to pall. Chicken Soup for the Soul goes sci-fi.
This is not a new book, but rather one of my all-time favorite sci-fi books. The concept is simple; a strange little out of the way bar that fantastical people and beings seem to somehow make their way to. The book is divided up into individual stories. Spider Robinson has a great sense of humor (warning you should like, rather, LOVE puns) which shines through all of the stories, and although some are clearly comical in nature, there are more serious and heartfelt ones as well. It's a quirky book and one I've always found refreshingly different from most other works. If you want something to gauge it by, if you are a fan of Douglas Adams and the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy series, I think you will love this book. There are sequels to this as well, and they are all good and written in the same vein of storytelling.
