AMAZING! I simply love the world Heather Burch has created in her Halflings series! Nikki Youngblood is my favorite young heroine to date. I read this book in two sittings- half the book the first night, the final half the second night. It's that good. I found myself laughing, crying, sighing, cheering, and rooting on the characters through all the accidents, incidents, and action (and there is lots of action). I love the relationships and tensions between not only the mc Nikki and the Halflings, but also the dynamics between the Halfling brothers. You can't help but love these characters. Heather Burch writes with the perfect combination of passion, description, and plot that causes the story to come alive and play out like a great movie in your mind! (In the Kindle version: I am also very happy to report that I found very few typos/editing errors! My ocd really hates it when a slew of typos pulls me out of a good story.) This book is a must if you have a daughter who enjoys to read! Nikki is a character that will make your daughter stand a little taller and realize there is more to life than being a damsel in distress waiting for a prince to save her. She's one protagonist you won't easily forget and you sure won't forget the Lost Boys-- Mace, Raven, and Vine anytime soon either! This is the kind of book it's easy to get lost in... time will fly by and the end will come much too soon! I cannot wait to dive into the next two books in this fantastic series.

I liked this book. I thought it was a lot of fun and there is nothing like a supernatural mystery to liven things up. The novel pulled me in from the first page and I was eager to know what happens next. I've read a couple of books where boys are half-angels or fallen angels or something, but I like how these boys have guidance from a real angel. It keeps them and me the reader grounded. Nikki is a pretty bold character, but I like her and I look forward to learning more about her. The book does leave you with probably more questions than answers, but that is typical of a series. The drawback to this novel is that it does play on teen stereotypes you have the two boys one girl thing going and one boy is typically "good" and the other is typically "bad." Ms. Burch does give more depth to the boys, but there is stll that feeling that you've met these characters before. And again, the two guys one girl story never leaves me completely satisfied in the end, but it's not over yet so I may be surprised. I love that Will gets downloads from heaven, its always odd to read books about angels who never talk to God. Fun book, cool people (who wouldn't want to date a guy with a few supernatural gifts), interesting mystery. Recommended!

Some strange things are happening to Nikki Youngblood. She's been chased by ugly dogs and followed by some really cute guys. And she's not sure why. The next thing she knows, all three guys enroll in her school and are in all her classes! How weird is that? But the more she learns about Mace, Raven, and Vine, the more she learns about why those weird things were happening to her. One thing is certain life will never be the same!

Whoo! Now this was a fun read--and a quick one too. (I love quick reads.) Heather Burch has crafted an intriguing storyworld with her Halflings (half angel/half humans) and their history.

One thing... The premise of angels having mated with humans bothers me. While there are some who interpret the passage in Genesis 64 to mean that demons mated with human women, I find that disturbing and suggest a deeper study of Genesis 64. (I highly recommend Randy Alcorn's article on the subject.) I realize, however, that not everyone holds my view of this subject and that this is a fictional story. But if that kind of subject matter bothers you, this story might.

That being said, I was drawn into the story from page one and couldn't wait to see how this story would turn out. Luckily I knew in advance what I was in for. This is the first book in a trilogy. So I knew there would be a bit of a cliffhanger headed my way as to the overall mystery. No matter. It was still a fun, romantic read. I have no guesses as to which angel boy Nikki might choose--or if she even will! But I look forward to reading the next two books. I hope it won't be too long of a wait because I am hooked on Halfings!
Nikki Youngblood is not your typical 17 year-old girl. An expert at martial arts, she is also an accomplished artist and rides a motorcycle. Her parents buy and sell antique weapons. One would think she hardly needs protecting.

But when evil begins to hunt her, three guardians show up in the form of gorgeous teenage boys. Raven, Mace and Vine draw the attention of every girl at school, but Nikki is intrigued with them for other reasons. They're Halflings - half human, half angel.

Living with their guardian, Will, Raven is the rebel, Mace is the obedient one with leadership qualities and Vine is the youngest on his first mission and enamored with bowling and candy. Nikki gets caught between her feelings for Mace, who wants only to protect her and Raven who's bad boy ways appeal to her, but also make her suspicious of his motives.

When Damon Vessler enters her life and says he's her godfather, her world is turned upside down. She eventually must decide if she has the faith to believe in guardian angels and choose to fight with them against the evil that lurks.

I struggled in the first half of the book to connect with Nikki but by the second half, I was hooked. I like how the author handles the storyline of the love triangle where Nikki doesn't look like she's stringing two boys along, but rather unsure of herself and her feelings the way any teenage girl would be. I like that Nikki is a strong, female character and yet has insecurities just like any other girl. I love the creativity behind the world of Halflings and I'm more than ready to find out what happens in book two, Guardian.
