“Show Me the Murder” is a complex and entertaining mystery story by a native of northern Missouri, Caroline Mulford. The use of the phase “Show Me” alerts the reader to the fact that the story is set in Missouri, specifically in a fictitious northern Missouri small town of 10,000 residents, Laycock, Missouri. The detective in the story is a former CIA operative (Phoenix D. Smith) who has returned to her home town of Laycock to recover from a serious gunshot wound incurred on a covert courier mission for the CIA. Unlike Sherlock Holmes, Phoenix has two sidekicks to help her, both childhood friends. The novel is well-plotted, with many and varied plot twists throughout the story. The well-delineated characters, however, are the main draw for the book. The relationships between Phoenix and her childhood friends is neither simple nor straightforward, especially because Phoenix has an ingrained sense of secrecy and distrust that makes her re-adjustment to Laycock very difficult. The dialogue is snappy and often humorous, reminding me of Rex Stout’s characterization-through-dialogue. Since both Stout and Mulford are fans of Jane Austen, they may have learned how to write dialogue from Austen’s incomparable narrative techniques. This story is a page-turner: I read the book in one long day. When I finished, I found myself so involved with the characters in the book that I immediately started reading the next book in the (so-far) five-book series. In less than a week, I have read all five books and am hoping Ms. Mulford will write more.

Very enjoyable read. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
Phoenix Smith, wounded ex pat spy-type, returns to her home town and discovers more mayhem, possibly endangering long-time friend Annalynn and others. Strange happenings, unknown bodies, a lot of heart-thumping action kept me turning pages.
An interesting book especially for those from NE Missouri. Several timely issued were addressed in the book.
It was a totally awesome mystery, and I don't say that lightly. I've read too many that didn't live up to my expectations. I liked the characters and the plot. I have only one complaint. I stayed up too late several nights because I couldn't stop reading. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
An excellent thriller! Former CIA agent, Phoenix Smith returns to her hometown to recuperate after being shot. Instead of relaxing & fixing up her late mother's house to sell, she gets involved with her best friend who's husband has been murdered. This story is full of suspense, humor, & challenges. Kept me on the edge of my seat.
A great debut starring ex-CIA operative Phoenix Smith. The plot was well-paced and the characters interesting and engaging. Phoenix is intelligent, likeable, and believable. While there's a bit too much reliance on putting on disguises and eavesdropping (and of course those being eavesdropped on naturally let key information slip out), overall, this is a really good read. I'm looking forward to more.
Let me start by.saying the first thing I did after reading the last page of this book was to download the next in the series, Show Me the Deadly Deer.

Phoenix Smith, ex-CIA, whose cover has been blown goes back home to a small town in Missouri to recover and figure out her life. She finds her best friend Annalynn in mourning for her husband, the sheriff, who was found dead in a motel with a much younger woman. It is ruled a murder, suicide. Annalynn refuses to believe her husband cheated and enlists Phoenix and Connie, another childhood friend, to investigate.

I really like Phoenix, Annalynn, and Connie. They are middle-aged, gutsy women who are very different but work as a team to solve the mystery. I also enjoyed the small town rural atmosphere and the ins and outs of the story.

I recommend Show Me The murder.
