Mrs Pollifax is off to the Middle East with Farrell again. A hijacking has occurred and while negotiating on the tarmac in Damascus a young American girl walks up to the first of two terrorists and tells him to give her the gun. In the stunned silence, a military man overtakes the second terrorist and the first is shot in the crossfire. She is rather quiet and unassuming afterwards and then disappears in the wrong car. Farrell and Pollifax are meant to confirm and if possible return her to the states, but questions about her motivation and even loyalty are present. Fortuitous encounters are of course at the heart of this escapade as usual. The last book but not intended to be so leaves a sense of wanting to more, but at the same time its fitting as Mrs Pollifax could still be called to serve at any time.

Mrs. Pollifax has had barely enough time to recover from her last adventure (INNOCENT TOURIST) before Carstairs is calling again. Amanda Pym, an American who recently saved the lives on a hijacked plane, has been kidnapped. Believing that she is still alive, Carstairs sends Mrs. Pollifax and Farrell to Syria to track down the truth. By following notes left for them and attending secret rendezvous, they start to track down clues. But is she alive? Can Mrs. Pollifax free her if she is?
This is the fourteenth and latest is the long running and always enjoyable Mrs. Pollifax series. The plot is nothing out of the ordinary for this series, but enjoyable just the same and included a few interesting twists. Mrs. Pollifax is as resourceful as ever, and the cast of new characters is interesting and lively, especially Joe.
I recommend this book for any fan of the series. If you haven't read any yet, start with the first (UNEXPECTED MRS. POLLIFAX). You won't regret it.
Loved this book. Historically correct and enjoyed learning about Middle East. Great plot and characters. Kept me guessing how it would end.
I have been reading about Mrs. Pollifax for years. All these books are action packed and full of good clean fun. This is the only one that I have found that is available in and I am waiting to buy others. I have her books, but I also want to get them in as I am trying to clean out my library and won't let them go till I have replaced them in my . (hint, hint) I like all the characters in these books and these books certainly keep me wanting more! I recommend Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax series to all ages. I first read her books more than twenty years ago and it is like becoming acquainted with an old friend.
I have read several of the Mrs. Pollifax books. This one, not unlike the others, was an entertaining get away read. I am grateful to Dorothy Gilman for creating this series. Mrs. Pollifax is a character that is both amusing and admirable. I look forward to reading all of the books about Pollifax and Farrell, and Cyrus and their adventures.
I love the Mrs. Pollifax series. Her adventures are so vivid and the Syria story lives up to Dorothy Gilman's standard. I could almost see myself in the desert of Syria wearing an abaya, walking through thorn trees.
I got started in book one through reader digest. And just went searching for more of that author and found there was 13 more adventures with this unique elderly lady. I have enjoyed it so much!!!! I have found myself laughing at her humor and sometimes attitude. She is smart, daring. and tough. Was sad to know that the 14th adventure was the last, because of the death of the author. Was so well written and the characters are so real. Such a great series when I finish the 14th book I Started over from book 1 again. I would and have recommend this series of Mrs. Pollifax from book 1 through 14 a MUST read. I can not say enough to describe what a great joy to read.Thumbs Up. Wish I could give more that 5 stars!! And this is also good for teens. The violence is not a bloods and guts thing.
